REMEMBERING GEORGE MICHAEL: FAITH (1987)

Image
This year's Christmas Day marked the fifth anniversary of George Michael's early death. With this post I wanted to pay some sort of tribute . Today I'll focus on his album Faith. It was released on 1987, after Wham's split in 1986 and after having released three successful solo singles: Careless Whisper ,   A different corner and the duet with Aretha Franklin, which won a Grammy Award for the Best R&B Performance by a duo or a group. Those three singles weren't included on the 10 tracks of the album, which made  the project seem a new chapter, like his physical appearance , as he would do with every other album (Older, 1996). All the songs were written and produced by Michael himself, which notices his involvement on the project and his music.  The album title is the same as the most successful track of the album, Faith. Faith is the perfect blend of rock and roll and pop. With its iconic video, George Michael established himself as a visual artist, having mem

2022 BRITs NOMINATIONS. THE BRITS HAVE A PROBLEM WITH EDM.

This week the list of nominees for the 2022 Brits was announced. The ceremony will take place on February the 8th, coming back to their usual date. With the pandemic still fluttering, there's uncertainty about how the ceremony is going to be. Let's get into the nominations: Best hip-hop/grime/rap: The BRITs join the general opinion of the critics by nominating Little Simz, who's getting the first places of the lists of the Best Album of The Year. Apart from the now well-known AJ Tracey and Dave (both with albums praised by the critic, even if commercially it's hasn't been the same as their predecessors), the new additions come with Ghetts (shortlisted to this year's Mercury Prize) and Central Cee. -AJ Tracey -Dave -Central Cee -Ghetts -Little Simz Best pop/R&B: This category always feels a little strange because there is no R&B artist at all, except  maybe Joy Crookes. This concentration of giving one award for two major categories has never been underst

'COWBOY DISCO': THE UNEXPECTED CONNECTION BETWEEN COUNTRY AND DISCO.

Image
In an interview with Spanish music website  JENESAISPOP , published last week, Parcels talked about the term ' cowboy disco ' and how it defines their latest album 'Day/Night'.  Cowboy disco seems to be the defined genre for the band's second album (their first new project since their self-titled debut in 2018). The term alludes to a disco-funk sound and country or folk lyrics. In the interview, Jules gave as an example their single Theworstthing. The lyrics on this song are gloomy and moving, while the groove drives it to disco.  Some of the feelings and lyrics on this album portrait a dramatic melancholic and sadness, that better relates with country and folk.  What the term shows is the union of the two genres with an evident setting, Australia: Jules Crommelin says in the interview that this album was written before the pandemic, missing and remembering Australia while the band was in Berlin. The closeness to the countryside that exists in Australia drove Parce

CYRANO BY FRANCESCO GUCCINI.

Image
In 1996 the Italian singer and songwriter Francesco Guccini published Cyrano as one of the songs from his album D'amore, di morte e di altre sciocchezze. The track, written by Giancarlo Bigazzi, Beppe Dati and Guccini, has aged as one of the best cantautori pieces.  In it, Guccini transforms in Cyrano, the famous protagonist of Edmond Rostand 's drama, to do social criticism and ends up making one of the most moving declarations of love to Rossana, Cyrano's lover.  His interest on literature is not unusual; he is a poet and has written other songs about other magna opera, like about Don Quixote .  1. Cyrano de Bergerac: Cyrano is the perfect Romanticism's hero (even if the play is from 1897). His big nose moves him away from the society, which makes fun of him. Consequently, Cyrano has learnt to defend himself with bravery, haughtiness and courage.  He is in love with Rossana, his cousin, but he's afraid of telling that he loves her. Meanwhile, Rossana loves  Christ

EMAs NOMINATIONS: EACH YEAR THEY'RE LESS EUROPE.

The MTV's Europe Music Awards are set to be celebrated on November 14th from Hungary. The nominations were revealed just a few days ago. Let's get into them! Best artist:  Doja Cat Ed Sheeran Justin Bieber Lady Gaga Lil Nas X The Weeknd Lady Gaga seems quite unfitting here. Her album Chromatica did not have such impact in Europe and if it's because of Rain On Me , it was nominated last year, so it makes no sense. Olivia Rodrigo would have made more sense here. Best video: Doja Cat ft. SZA – “Kiss Me More” Ed Sheeran – “Bad Habits” Justin Bieber – “Peaches” ft. Daniel Caesar, Giveon Lil Nas X – “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” Normani ft. Cardi B – “Wild Side” Taylor Swift – “willow" Throughout the whole list the nominations there are similarities with the nominees for the MTV's Vmas. An example is Normani's nomination. We all can agree that is a worked video, but it hasn't even entered in the UK's top 40.  Best collaboration: Black Eyed Peas, Shakira

RKOMI GOES ALT-ROCK WITH HIS SINGLE 'PARTIRE DA TE'.

Image
Italian rapper Rkomi dropped his third studio album, Taxi Driver , in April. Inspired by the Martin Scorsese film, the album is certified double platinum in Italy and Rkomi has reached  number one in the singles chart, with 'NUOVO RANGE' (ft Sfera Ebbasta). The album includes fourteen tracks and ten of them are featurings. Rkomi recruits a great line-up of Italian pop, from his frequent collaborator Ernia to Irama and Italy's King of trap, Sfera Ebbasta. Today I am going to focus on one track that isn't a feature, 'PARTIRE DA TE'. It probably is the piece with the biggest rock sound on the record. Since the beginning, the alt -rock electric guitar riff captivates you, which is emphasized by the piano that makes you immerse in the song and the rhythm. Despite the music is not written by Rkomi, this inclusion isn't casual, as he confessed to Billboard Italy that he's learnt to play the piano during the pandemic. In the chorus, Rkomi is helped by the a-cap

FIVE O FIVES RELEASE NEW SINGLE 'IF YOU WON'T SAY IT'.

Five O Fives dropped their new song, If You Won't Say It' a couple of weeks ago. It's the third single for the band (after the release of ' Something To Do ' back in January) and this time the sound is darker. The track talks about being the  one taking the first step in a relationship :That moment where there's a mutual attraction and interest, but nobody says so, creating insecurity on your perception of the partner's feelings:'If you won't say it, how will I  know?'. This uncertainty burst in some existentialism : 'If you won't say it, where will I go?'.  The track begins with an indie-rock bass, which helps to set the scene,  to then melt with folky percussion at the start of the chorus, highlighting Alice's voice.

CARLY PEARCE - 29 WRITTEN IN STONE REVIEW.

Image
Carly Pearce released her third album on Friday. The album comes as a following part of her 29 EP, dropped in February. The album includes the 7 songs from the EP and eight new tracks. This extension of 29 the EP melts perfectly with the songs unveiled back in February.  It feels like the rest of the chapter, a part of her healing told with all the authenticity.  One of the new songs  is Never Wanted To Be That Girl   with Ashley Mcbride. There 's no  other artist that could drive the song with that honesty than Ashley Mcbride. In her Genius commentary to her song One night standards , she described the song as 'an exercise in honesty'  and that is what  Never Wanted To Be That Girl  is about : Speaking your feelings in such a difficult situation in a relationship;being the other girl. The album starts with the funny and country-rock  Diamondback (cowritten with Kelsea Ballerini , among others), which has some of  the  Before He Cheats revenge in the chorus. According wi

LET'S TALK ABOUT THE 2021 CMA AWARDS NOMINATIONS.

The nominations for the CMA Awards came out three days ago. The ceremony will take place on November 10th awarding the best country artists, singles and albums of the year (the eligibility period is from July 1,2020 to June 30, 2021). Let's get into the nominations: ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR: This is the biggest award of the night. Eric Church and Chris Stapleton earn a nomination in this category. Both lead the nominations with five each.  Eric Church Luke Combs Miranda Lambert Chris Stapleton Carrie Underwood Church and Stapleton nominations seem reasonable. Both have released projects this year, which could be candidates to 'Album Of The Year'. Luke Combs gets a nomination too. He is one of the biggest country stars nowadays and he has had great chart success with 'Forever After All'.  The only nomination that is a little disappointing for me is Miranda Lambert's. Despite releasing The Marfa Tapes, she's been living by the success of 'Settling down'
