OLIVER BEARDMORE- NOT SINKING, YET FLOATING- EP REVIEW : AN IMMERSION IN SHOEGAZING.

Image
The now London- based singer and songwriter Oliver Beardmore released last Friday his EP, Not Sinking, Yet Floating, which includes his latests singles and two new songs ( Closer and I'm Sure You Know ). The EP gets Oliver's work from the past two years together.  The result is a dive in guitar walls, unbreakable textures and a total immersion in Shoegazing. Even though tracks like Closer or Not Sinking, Yet Floating strengthen the introspection, creating a very dark and gloomy atmosphere, there's also time for more melodic pieces ( Fiesta and With The Heavens On Your Side), closer to modern-pop songwriting.  The guitar is the  protagonist of the collection, cause and effect of the project. The intention to cover the wide sea of the instrument's dimensions leads to have a very alt-rock sound, getting nostalgic mid-80s  and 90s guitars on the EP-titled cut, Not Sinking, Yet Floating .

FIVE O FIVES RELEASE NEW SINGLE 'IF YOU WON'T SAY IT'.

Five O Fives dropped their new song, If You Won't Say It' a couple of weeks ago. It's the third single for the band (after the release of ' Something To Do ' back in January) and this time the sound is darker. The track talks about being the  one taking the first step in a relationship :That moment where there's a mutual attraction and interest, but nobody says so, creating insecurity on your perception of the partner's feelings:'If you won't say it, how will I  know?'. This uncertainty burst in some existentialism : 'If you won't say it, where will I go?'.  The track begins with an indie-rock bass, which helps to set the scene,  to then melt with folky percussion at the start of the chorus, highlighting Alice's voice.

YNES RELEASES NEW SINGLE 'GOD'S LITTLE PUNCHING BAG'.

Described as an anthem to imperfection, YNES  released a few weeks ago her new single, God's Little Punching Bag.   The song takes inspiration from ' the Britpop revival of the mid-to-late 2000's ' to find beauty writing about the outcasts and terrible days.  On the track, YNES shows a wide vocal range from punk to sweeter vocals, like when she sings 'I like it like that', recalling the-acoustic-Taylor Swift for a moment.  We could say Ynes  was influenced by Taylor Swift's spoken parts in songs for almost the end of the track, but she keeps her pop-punk spirit alive. 'God's Little Punching Bag' is about accepting imperfection - and maybe bad luck too-. It's a DIY-styled-homage to making mistakes and being different.  Ver esta publicación en Instagram Una publicación compartida de YNES (@ynesmusic)

APRIL INDIE RELEASES: REDWOOD AND EMMA MAE.

Image
1.Redwood-Rewind: A ceremonious piano introduces Redwood's soulful vocals that are the star of the song. On the track, she finds peace and hope in the possibility of rewriting your steps and story. There is space for some tenderness too and sweetness ('do it all over again sweetheart '), like she has just found the solution to her problems. The song creates its whole and unique atmosphere of weird intense calm. 2. Emma Mae-Boys In Bands : There is something about this song that makes you feel you are listening to bbc Radio 1 or Capital fm suddenly. The topic of falling in love with boys in bands or the bad guys seems so proper for a pop song. The first minute of the song is soft and thoughtful, like you were thinking out loud because you know you shouldn't date those guys. Later the song gets more rock. There's something punk on Emma's voice that gets gets along with the electric guitars and drums so well.

OLIVER BEARDMORE RELEASES NEW SINGLE 'WITH THE HEAVENS ON YOUR SIDE'

Exploring 'alternative guitar spectrum', the Birmingham singer Oliver Beardmore will definitely bring you 2000s-bands nostalgia with the second single from his upcoming EP.  Warm vocals get you in the track. However, these turn into some coldness while delivering the message of the song, maybe as a result of vulnerability. The certainty of  saying  'It's you that I  always knew'  goes against the oneiric atmosphere that the track creates: It's similar to when you wake up in the middle of the night and everything seems a little blurry. The unexpected and proper guitar solo on minute 2:33 is a great element of surprise on the record and emphasizes the feeling of the song . The track gets wilder and more rock at this point, but it fits in the well-produced ensemble of guitar walls and textures , melted with the percussion.  In the first listen, the image of a cold and rainy night comes to mind and the rhythmic drums ,alongside the guitars ,suggest the scene of a m

THE LATHUMS RELEASE PERSONAL NEW SINGLE 'OH MY LOVE'.

Image
The Lathums have released today their new single, Oh My Love , which sets the band closer to their new and upcoming album.  Despite the joy and the tranquility that the track reflects, there is a deeper meaning  or message in the song. Alex Moore, vocalist and writer of the song, explained in the band account's recent tweets the inspiration and some details about the process of writing the song: He confessed that he was able to complete the lyrics after experiencing the love of the fans and his ability to ' make other people feel emotions'  ,  and that the track came ' from pain and uncertainty'. Oh My Love seems to be a very personal track for Alex, who has also says that it is 'a little bit of me'. The official video came out just a few hours ago. Watch it below:

BEORMA RELEASE 'DROWN'.

Image
Following their single Woman, Beorma released yesterday Drown, the sixth track from their EP Virtual Emotionality and which   stays on the darkness that the duo explored in the project.  Tom's vocals gather fragility and vulnerability, mixed with sadness. There's also some anxiety in them, like if he was searching hard for an exit to his problems and that ends up in the contradictory series of thoughts that make the chorus ( 'Hold me up / Bring me down/ Help me drown') . That angst is the same that drives Tom to try to find the solution in drugs, and it's also caused by what other people say ( 'It's easy looking in from the outside'// 'I worry about what people say'), the social fear, common in the youth, nowadays. The song creates an atmosphere itself and the autotune digs deeper on the feeling of sinking, drawing it almost phisically. Beorma keeps on illustrating the problems of the youth, focusing now on mental health.

DISCOVER BEORMA and THEIR NEW SINGLE 'WOMAN'.

Frequently presented as an indie Pop/ R&B duo from Birmingham, Beorma consists of Tom and Ferns, who connected musically during lockdown and started to make music together. The result is the EP  Virtual Emotionality,  in which they touch common problems of the youth of today, from mental health to the internet and the complexity of Modern Day relationships. Their latest single, Woman,  which is out today to coincide with International Women's Day, addresses feminism. Tom's spoken word part  reflects on how women's use of their body in social media is seen in our society, pointing out that men 'only seem to enjoy (...) if the woman is not consenting' and the consequent incongruity and double-standard between men and women.  Fern's delicious and soothing vocals come as an answer to that hipocrisy ,claiming respect towards controlling men, who think that women choosing independence is going to weaken their position in a relationship. Virtual Emotionality   bri

BLOSSOMS BAND (Debut album and Cool Like You Review)

Image
Apart from Frank Ocean, during lockdown I discovered Blossoms . The English band from Stockport was formed back in 2013, but gained relevance with their debut single, Charlemagne. With it,  they stated the synths' predominance that will remain in their songs and was in their first single, You Pulled A Gun On Me   . Tom Ogden's vocals and his special way of writing love stories made the rest and drove to the band earning a nomination for the BRITS awards . First singles ( You pulled A Gun On Me, Cut Me And I'll Bleed, The Urge  and Blow ) have Tom Ogden singing roughly, with great chorus to sing along and much rawer guitars than later on the band music. . In Winter Kiss  they demonstrate they can do great slow-tempo songs , sounding soft-pop, with an acoustic guitar base, which could have served for a country song. Some of these songs were included in their debut-self titled album (2016). Alongside with a half of new tracks. Throughout the album Tom sings about love in diffe

THE FEARLESS THE 1975

The 1975 has released  'Notes On A Conditional Form' , the successor of 2018's 'A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships' . Since August, the band has been releasing singles, giving us a taste of the variety of genres that would be on the record: The punk anthem 'People' , which gots Matty Healy singing violently , as a warrior ; The retro-90s-dance track 'Frail State of Mind' , the 2000s pop-rock inspired love story 'Me & You together song' and the country influenced  'The Birthday Party'.  In april, they published 2 singles : Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America (ft. Phoebe Bridgers) showing the 1975 is unafraid of talking about controversial topics (homosexuality and religion) and If You're Too Shy (Let Me Know), their most commercial successful track yet (reaching number 14 on the UK Official Chart). This song gets back the usual topic on the last album, oline relationships, and has got a similar energy to It's Not Liv
