WHY THE BRITS WERE THE BEST AWARDS CEREMONY OF THE YEAR.

Last Wednesday The 2021 Brits were celebrated. Usually in February but delayed due to coronavirus restrictions, the Brits took the O2 Arena with the best ceremony of the year and the best Brits in years. Despite that, the ceremony lost 860,000 viewers since last year. The Dayly Mail points out that it's because viewers wanted to watch a show focused in music, not in politics (Dua Lipa seems to be the one to blame here for claiming better salaries for frontline workers). Anyway, awards ceremonies are losing more viewers each time: The Grammys had  historic low ratings and the same happened with ACM awards in country music or to the Oscars.

However,  this year's BRITS have been one of the best. Here's why:

1. Dynamism : The set was a big room with the celebrities sat in tables, like in the past years, but due to social distance , there was more space between the tables, so when winners were announced the artists had to walk a longer distance. This showed the true emotions of the awarded singers, like the happiness of Little Mix who came dancing to the stage.

Some of the speeches were really spontaneous, like Swift's or Haim's, surprised of winning the award for Best International Group. That naturalness reminded me of the 2020 NME awards, were there is time to give thanks and to make a short, fast and improvised discourse.

2. 2020 and the pandemic slipped into the speeches of some of the winners: In contrast with the Grammys, where the artists seemed in a bubble speaking the traditional speech of gratitude, here the artists referred to frontline workers and celebrated being in contact with the audience and fans. For example, Dua Lipa made a shout out to Boris Johson asking for better salaries for frontline workers.

Artists have directly suffered the consequences of the pandemic  by not being able to play live, without forgetting that many have suffered from covid. So, the thing is wasn't it the perfect night to be political? It's great to see artists fall down of their universe to show that they are in contact with reality and they weren't external to the pandemic and the fatal consequences in the UK 's society.

3.Taylor Swift received the Global Icon Award:She was the first woman to do so and the youngest act too. Her speech was mature, powerful, inspiring and it was an advice to  young artists. From a woman that has experienced the cruelty of  misogynist criticism, that tried to scorn her songs saying she was crazy and obsessed, Swift made the speech of someone who knows the rules of the game and who has overcome obstacles in her career.

4. The weeknd received the award for best male artist: Even though, I would have also loved to see Springsteen taking home the prize, like an honorific award, The weeknd deserved an award for being one of the artists of the year 2020. The fact that they awarded him qualifies the Brits and separate them from the Grammys boicot.

5. Dua Lipa took home the Album Of The Year Award:Dua Lipa won one of the most important awards of the night (apart from the Brit for Best Female Solo Artist) for her album Future Nostalgia. Acting as a closing for her Future Nostalgia era, she also performed a medley with the singles and other famous tracks of the album that didn't have the opportunity to be performed live. Her performance lasted more than five minutes, she paid homage to the Spice Girls styling and proved again her dancing skills, after a constant effort. This performance was memorable and establishes her more like a pop star, if she hasn't proved it yet.

6. Elton John performed 'It's a sin' ft Olly Alexander :They covered Pet Shop Boys' classic, which Alexander sang in the soundtrack of AIDS drama 'It's a Sin',one of the most watched series of Channel 4. Sir Elton John has always been so close to the cause, raising money and awareness through his foundation.

This performance is the latest verification of Elton being the protector father of pop. He's always watching for the future of the genre by including Blossoms on his playlists, collaborating with Rina Sawayama or playing live with Dua Lipa or Christine and the queens.

7.Harry Styles won the Brit for British single of the year:If there were two British acts that reined in the pop genre last year, those were Dua Lipa and Harry Styles. So, this award seemed truly deserved to me.

The Brits were an unavoidable social gala, full of spontaneity and with a great energy between artists that made it a friends reunion.
