EMAs NOMINATIONS: EACH YEAR THEY'RE LESS EUROPE.

 The MTV's Europe Music Awards are set to be celebrated on November 14th from Hungary. The nominations were revealed just a few days ago.

Let's get into them!

Best artist: 

  • Doja Cat
  • Ed Sheeran
  • Justin Bieber
  • Lady Gaga
  • Lil Nas X
  • The Weeknd

Lady Gaga seems quite unfitting here. Her album Chromatica did not have such impact in Europe and if it's because of Rain On Me , it was nominated last year, so it makes no sense. Olivia Rodrigo would have made more sense here.

Best video:

  • Ed Sheeran – “Bad Habits”
  • Justin Bieber – “Peaches” ft. Daniel Caesar, Giveon
  • Lil Nas X – “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)”
  • Normani ft. Cardi B – “Wild Side”
  • Taylor Swift – “willow"

Throughout the whole list the nominations there are similarities with the nominees for the MTV's Vmas. An example is Normani's nomination. We all can agree that is a worked video, but it hasn't even entered in the UK's top 40. 

Best collaboration:

  • Black Eyed Peas, Shakira – “Girl Like Me”
  • Silk Sonic (Bruno Mars, Anderson .Paak) – “Leave the Door Open”
  • Doja Cat ft. SZA – “Kiss Me More”
  • Lil Nas X, Jack Harlow – “Industry Baby”
  • The Kid LAROI, Justin Bieber – “Stay”
  • The Weeknd & Ariana Grande – “Save Your Tears” (remix)

In this category they've partly taken a look to the European charts , considering Girl Like Me (which reached the top 3 in Belgium, Hungary or France), but they've ignored them by taking into account Leave The Door Open (it peaked on number 20 on the Official Charts, not reaching the top 50 in countries like Germany or Spain).

Best group:

  • BTS
  • Imagine Dragons
  • Jonas Brothers
  • Little Mix
  • Måneskin
  • Silk Sonic

Well, I don't know why the Jonas Brothers are nominated here. Silk Sonic fits here better, in my opinion. Imagine Dragons receive a nomination in ,what might be, thieir worst era commercially . Maneskin are nominated here and , for me , there isn't any other group which has been as succesful in Europe as them. They're one of the artists  of the year.

Best pop:

  • BTS
  • Doja Cat
  • Dua Lipa
  • Ed Sheeran
  • Justin Bieber
  • Olivia Rodrigo

Dua Lipa receives a nomination here and even if Future Nostalgia seems quite far, Dua has reigned in pop with Levitating . 

Best alternative:

  • Halsey
  • Lorde
  • Machine Gun Kelly
  • Twenty One Pilots
  • Willow
  • Yungblud

Halsey and Lorde nominations feel unsuitable for this category. Lorde's Flower Power era hasn't been as her previous ones and Halsey seems to be more alternative now than with Manic, but neither of them have been the stars of the year. Glass Animals could have fit here as they did in the Vmas. 

Best hip hop:

  • Cardi B
  • DJ Khaled
  • Drake
  • Kanye West
  • Megan Thee Stallion
  • Nicki Minaj

These could be the nominees for any other award ceremony in the US (BET AWARDS, Billboard Music Awards, American Music Awards...). This could have been the perfect opportunity to nominate some acts of the UK-hip-hop scene that are usually ignored by the awards. Dave, AJ Tracey could have fit here, even The kid Laroi would fit better than Nicki Minaj and Dj Khaled.

Another list of nominations pulled out from the Vmas (at least they've considered Girl In Red and Harry Styles). If in the US, Demi Lovato had little repercussion with Dancing With The Devil, in Europe is ten times less. The same I would say with H.E.R.

  • Tayc
As I consider that these awards reward the most succesful artists of each country (in the charts and with more fans) I think that , apart from Tayc, another rapper of the French hip-hop- scene should have been considered, like Jul. Even I would expect Wejdene to appear here or Clara Luciani .

Best Italian Act:
  • Maneskin
  • Aka 7even
  • Caparezza
  • Madame
  • Rkomi
I agree with the EMAs in nominating Maneskin (The most international Italian act nowadays), Rkomi and Madame. However, I miss Sangiovanni in this category.

Best Spanish Act: 
  • C. Tangana
  • Aitana
  • Pablo Alborán 
  • Ana Mena
  • Colectivo da Silva
I don't understand nominating a down-time-Pablo Alborán, with his least succesful album yet. I'm surprised the EMAs nominate such a tiny indie band as Colectivo Da Silva.

Best German Act:
  • Álvaro Soler
  • Badmómzjay
  • Provinz
  • Tokio Hotel
  • Zoe Wees
Here I miss Apache 207 and if the MTV were looking to nominate a woman in trap, they would have better looked at Loredana. 
Tokio Hotel nom got me feeling like I'm in 2007 or 2009.

Best Nordic Act: 
  • Sigrid
  • Zara Larsson 
  • Drew Sycamore
  • Swedish House Mafia
  • Tessa
It's great to see Sigrid nominated on this one. Zara Larsson gets a nomination in her weakest and shorter era. I would have expected Viktor Leksell to appear here.

RENTRER CHEZ MOI- CHRISTINE AND THE QUEENS.

  Chrisitine and The Queens regresa con una nueva canción tras su álbum Paranoia, Angels & True Love y después de publicar en fin de año su excelente versión de Staying Alive de los Bee Gees -con algún verso de Night Fever - que ya interpretó en el Festival de Cannes de 2023.  El nuevo tema viene  por sorpresa y es cantado completamente en francés. Rentrer chez moi parece regresar al pop minimalista y envuelve en su atmósfera reflexiva . Como ya dije en mi reseña de To Be Honest , Christine brilla en sus letras poéticas y existenciales y lo vuelve a hacer aquí, con la sencillez y autenticidad en la expresión del sentimiento por encontrar el amor y el refugio.   Siempre que Christine canta enteramente en francés, suele acompañar un sentimiento -con la excepción de su último disco, donde predomina el inglés- de intimidad, vulnerabilidad y delicadeza , como hizo en Chaleur Humaine , en las baladas de Chris y en   la mágica  Rien Dire .  El existencialismo se enfatiza en el puente

DON’T FORGET ME-MAGGIE ROGERS.

  La semana pasada se publicó el tercer disco de Maggie Rogers, Don’t Forget Me .   Para este tercer trabajo, Maggie abandona las guitarras rockeras, los sintetizadores y los agudos de Surrender para volver a sonidos más acústicos y diurnos. En Don’t Forget Me se deja el sonido nocturno y comprimido de la ciudad por el de banda sonora para los viajes de carretera de primavera-verano . Maggie Rogers se sitúa más próxima al single de 2019 , Love You For a Long Time , cuestionándose sobre el amor verdadero y abandonando la euforia del deseo de Surrender , reducido solamente a Drunk . Las reminiscencias a Kacey Musgraves -muy notables en el banjo de Sick Of Dreaming - en parte se deben al trabajo de Ian Fitchfuk, productor de muchas de las canciones de Golden Hour , también de Ghost de Sigrid , que figura como compositor de ocho de las diez canciones del disco, además de productor. THERAPIE TAXI SPLIT UP AFTER SEVEN YEARS.

 Just a year ago, Therapie taxi dropped their second album, titled 'Cadavre Exquis'. The project was the second chapter to their successful first record, 'Hit Sale'. The song with the same title peaked on number 18 on France singles chart. It featured Belgian rapper Romeo Elvis and the video has more than 70 million views on YouTube. They were shortlisted for a Victoires de la musique award.   Sometimes described as controversial, Therapie taxi explored almost every genre in popular music, from synth pop ('Candide Crush'), to acoustic classic French pop ('La Proue'), trap beats ('BB la nuit'), house music and French hip hop. They managed to have their own public trying out different genres, unafraid to get out of the standards and being in constant  experimentation.   But, luckily, they are releasing an EP before they say goodbye, which is out January the 8th.
