ART & THE 1975

This post is the first one of a new section, called 'Music & Visual Art'. Its purpose is to show the connection between music and other arts, specially visual arts. The point is proving how ,with the help of other arts , we can get to reflect the same that music does.

In this first post the focus will be on THE 1975. Its frontman, Matty Healy appreciates and is so into different ways of art (painting, fashion and music ,of course). In an interview with GQ, he admits that ,for musicians, the 'live show is (their) currently artistic statement visually'. That is probably why he also uses visual design.

Talking to Pitchfork for the On the records section, where Matty broke down all of the 1975's albums,he described the first one  as an 'Apocalyptic teenage romance' . He wanted the album's art to be 'nostalgic (...), but also modern' , something that completely relates to the project . Black and white with some classic typography and the 1975's typical box ( a really recognizable sign that remains from their first EPs) made the album cover nostalgic. The addition of neon was the closeness to 80s culture.

The second album represents colors' entrance and 'filtered reality' for the 1975. Pink is in all the album's music videos and artwork. Enjoying TUMBLR's glory , Matty and Sam Burgess-Johnson created  incredible pictures to illustrate the songs from the album. They made an aesthetically beautiful ensemble,. It was an art gallery to the record and we guess it was also to Matty , who picked up places that had an special' relevance' to him.

For the third record, Matty did not want colorful art. The cover is inspired by Mondrian's work, which he broke down last week for Google Arts&Culture. The artwork is very clean, deconstructed and pure, like the use of primary colors.

Notes On A Conditional Form's artwork is their most minimalist. It is very simple and it is not just visual art. It is a very sensorial art . That explains Matty's pursue of texture in its rawest way.

This aesthetical journey is also explained in a video for Radio 1 (An Aesthetic History of THE 1975).

THE 1975 aesthetic is a deep journey to get the closest nearness to a visual example of their music, an incredible search of the visual reflection of their art .
