VMAS 2020 NIMINATIONS ARE HERE: SNUBS, NEW CATEGORIES....

The nominations for the 2020  MTV VMAS have been announced . They are always controversial. This joins to the special circunstances that surround the awards. First, due to the cornavirus and the resulting lockdown , artists have not been able to shoot videos during this time, which has lead to an animated videos' avalanche . The VMAS answer to the situation creating two categories : 'BEST MUSIC VIDEO FROM HOME' and 'BEST QUARANTINE PERFORMANCE'. Despite this two categories , in the others there is no place for a video improvised during lockdown. The nominations in the big categories do not include any video of this nature . This drives artists to depend on having recorded videos for their music before lockdown. If not, better forget about a nomination for the biggest categories (well, the only exception may be  Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber's STUCK WITH U ).

One of the biggest categories is Video of The Year . The nominees are Billie Eilish (Everything i wanted), Eminem ft Juice World (Godzilla), Future ft. Drake (Life Is Good), Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande for Rain On Me ( both are the most nominated this year witn 9 nominations each),The Weeknd (Blinding Lights) and Taylor Swift  with The Man. The singer was one of the biggest winners last year winning Video of the year and Video for Good for You Need to Calm Down. The Man video features Taylor Swift dressed as a man and it matches with the feminist message that is under the song . However it has been a sleeper in the charts.

Let's get into another big category , Artist of  the year. Alongside with Lady Gaga , Post Malone, DaBaby , Meghan Thee Stallion , The Weeknd , Justin Bieber is also nominated. He released his album Changes in February after 5 years hiatus  pretending that this was going to be his year . However, the album has not resisted long in the top 10 of Billboard 200 (You can compare it with Harry Styles' Fine Line or Post Malone's Hollywood Bleeding) and not earning the number 1 in the US with Yummy, the lead single of the album. His collaboration with Ariana Grande (that did hit number #1 on Billboard ) and the stability of Intentions (ft Quavo and also nominated for Best Pop) in the top 10 may have influenced to consider Justin in this category.

The last big category is Song of the year . Doja Cat's Say So , The Box by Roddy Rich, Post Malone's Circles, Billie Eilish's vulnerable Everything i wanted and Meghan thee Stallion for Savage are nominated. Maybe, Dua Lipa could have been nominated . She has had big success with her hit Don't Start Now .

For Best collaboration two latin artists have been shorlisted , Karol G and J Balvin , which means they are not relegated to the Best Latin category. 

For the Push Best New Artist award , a greater variety is appreciated , with two British artists nominated (and not in a technical category).

In the Best Pop category the nominees are Halsey (You Should Be Sad), BTS for On, Taylor Swift with Lover (she won last year and surely will be nominated nest year for Folkclore), Jonas Brothers (What A Man Gotta Do), Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande for Rain On Me and Justin Bieber ft. Quavo (Intentions). Here it is clear that Dua Lipa , little snubbed this year) could have been nominated for Physical (produced by CANADÁ) or Break My Heart. Also Harry Styles could have been considered for Adore You or the full of Summer vibes Watermelon Sugar. Both artists have only earned nominations in the technicals categories. They also forgot Selena Gomez's Rare video or Camila Cabello . Even if Romance has not had success as its predecessor , Living Proof could have earned one nomination in this category.

In the Best Hip Hop category my only doubt is  if Meghan Thee Stallion's Savage has got a video or is the award for the song?

After 22 years without a Best Alternative category , it is finally here!(apparently taking BEST EDM video place) The 1975 are nominated alongside Lana Del Rey , MGK, All Time Low and 21 pilots with his pop track Level Of Concern.

In Best Latin , J Balvin is nominated 4 times , so its probably that he ends winning. All of the songs are reggaeton tracks. 

For Best R&B , they nominee H.E.R , who repeats after being nominated last year for Carried Away (ft Bryson Tiller) and they forget about Jhene Aiko, Teyana Taylor  or Khelani 's quarantine style videos 

shot at home.

H.E.R is also shorlisted for Video for Good with I Can't Breathe . The video was released the 27th following the audio release the 19th of June . If VMAS count the release date of the official video, BLACKPINK could have been nominated for Best k-POP or Rosalía and Trvis Scott's TKN could have been considered into the Best Latin award.

In Best Quarantine Performance, they forget about Katy Perry's American Idol  Finale performance  and in Best Home Video Charli XCX or Khelani could have been considered.

That is all about the non-technical categories . As always , there are snubs , biggest nominees but maybe , the lockdown should have been more considered and allow quarantine videos or animated videos be in the main categories. Coronavirus and lockdown have marked 2020 but this is not reflected in the biggest awards only in two new categories.
