CHRIS ALBUM REVIEW-CHRISTINE AND THE QUEENS
After successing with Chaleur Humaine, her first, soft and vulnerable album, Christine and the Queens came back in 2018 with her second chapter Chris . The title is a true statement. She is not vulnerable now, she is fearless, confident, ready to embrace her sexuality, often playing with gender ambiguity.
The record opens with Comme Si ,a synth-pop track where she declares that this new persona (Chris)has always been there (I've been there ,infectious).
The second track is Girlfriend. This is a true affirmation of Chris non embracing a gender (Girlfriend/ Don't feel like a girlfriend/ But lover/ Damn, I'd be your lover) alongside Dam-Funk's vocals and his fantastic keytar that drives the song into a funky addictive piece.
In The walker (video shot in Spain) , while Christine searches for violence in her skin, her voice seems a little more vulnerable and sincere (People politely smile to make sure I won't come any closer).
Chris is not afraid of talking about her existential worries in Doesn't Matter . She talks about suicidal thoughts, religion...
In 5 dollars we see Christine freely talking bout desire . Chris' vocals seem to get stronger alongside the constant piano and the drums hit. It musically illustrates the euphoria of desire, but it draws it not in a darker way as sometimes occurs in Contemporary R&B .The song sounds like a delightful, hopeful morning.
As I said before, Chris is fearless of talking about desire and in Damn (what must a woman do) she proves it. This feminist anthem uses Spanish to show the forcefulness of what she is saying, defending women's pleasure.
Apart from The Walker , other moments of vulnerability are What's her face and Make some sense. The first one contains nostalgia and it sounds closer to a ballad.
The record is a brilliant synth-pop masterpiece with 80s and 90s influences. The rhythims are addictive, drive you to dance. The break-out of Christine and the queens into a empowered woman is accompained by elegant pop, great production that will take you to the dance floor . Her bilingualism, her characteristic touch bring hope to the pop genre .
I really recommend you to watch her live videos, performing on Chris tour . The choreographies match perfectly with the songs. Her studies and inspiration in theatre are patent in every dance-move that reflects the emotion of each piece.
